Important health benefits of drinking more water

David Perlmutter, M.D., a New York Times bestselling author and neurologist at The Perlmutter Health Center in Naples, Florida says that the benefits of drinking adequate amounts of pure water cannot be overemphasized. In fact, he believes there are more than one hundred health benefits associated with proper hydration, including better brain function and sharper memory due to better oxygenation; improved bowel regularity; rejuvenated skin tone and texture; lower blood pressure; fewer mood swings; relief from headaches and migraines due to dehydration; more energy throughout your day...and so much more! The list goes on and on – but if you’re dehydrated, you won’t see many (if any) benefits at all!

Getting started with becoming a more hydrated person

Drinking more water and staying well-hydrated has a lot of health benefits, including a decrease in bloat, clearer skin, and an overall higher level of energy. But that’s not all! staying hydrated also has important effects on your brain health, as it acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. You may find in depth information with nutritionist David Perlmutter here: 8 Reasons You Should Start Drinking More Water Now. Furthermore, to drive home the importance of hydrating, Dr. Perlmutter states that “when the human body senses various stresses like dehydration or hypoxia, we actually create fructose and activate all the downstream survival mechanisms like making fat, increasing blood pressure and raising blood sugar.”

Dehydration and the Uric Acid Connection and Effects on the Body

By drinking recommended amounts of water, it will help flush the system of uric acid which is a precursor and significant contributor to heart disease, kidney stones, and gout.  Did you know that there are natural ways to help your body purify itself from excess uric acid? Uric acid has even been shown to play a role in diseases such as arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes and other immune system conditions.  In fact, it’s estimated that 90% of Americans have too much uric acid floating around in their bodies!  To learn more in depth on the uric acid connection please read Dr. Perlmutter’s book entitled Drop Acid a fascinating look into the forgotten world of uric acid.

Here's why you should make sure to stay hydrated every day.

I’m going to be totally honest with you -  I make sure to hydrate throughout the day with my favorite mason jar, it makes me feel special when I use a cute vessel for my water.    My energy levels are consistent, my skin has cleared up, and my digestion has improved significantly since making water one of my regular habits.

How much water do I need?

While estimates vary slightly, most sources agree that men need about 13 cups (3 liters) per day and women need around 9 cups (2.2 liters). Your body naturally loses water when you breathe, sweat, and go to the bathroom, so it’s important to replenish what you lose. If you’re not a fan of plain water, try adding fresh lemon or lime slices for flavor. Avoid sweetened drinks and sodas because they contain empty calories from added sugars—these are no better than sugary desserts! And remember that alcohol is a diuretic: It increases urination, which leads to dehydration. Alcohol also has many other negative health effects. Drink in moderation if you choose to imbibe at all!

How do I get my 8 glasses in?

If you’re already counting your cups, there are a few different ways to measure them: 8 ounces is one cup; 16 ounces is two cups (one pint); 12 ounces is half a liter, which most people think of as 2 cups; and 24 ounces is three quarters of a liter, or three cups. It doesn’t really matter which measurement system you use—the key is that you count! And if you find yourself running out of water before bedtime, try having a glass before dinner instead. You might also want to consider investing in a reusable bottle which is my new obsession aside from the mason jars. The more convenient it is for you to drink throughout the day, the more likely it will become part of your routine.

Why you should drink more water

Most people don’t drink enough water daily, and as a result, they feel tired throughout their day and experience headaches and dehydration symptoms. If you want to avoid these types of issues, increasing your intake is one way to feel better and more energized throughout your day. Even if you don’t feel like it now, staying properly hydrated will improve your quality of life in many ways—the following are just a few tips for making sure that your body receives enough H2O -David Perlmutter, MD, FACN: The importance of drinking water can't be overstated.

Final Thoughts on Staying Hydrated

If you want to start hydrating today, try adding a few extra glasses of water into your daily routine. If you have trouble remembering or just don’t like plain H2O, try adding some lemon slices or cucumber slices for flavor; both are great sources of vitamins and minerals themselves!
